Values

We want a society where no-one is excluded or discriminated against – especially not because of their hearing levels.  Nobody should be judged for who they are or what they believe.

Lip reading

Lip reading is a valuable skill for anyone with an acquired hearing loss. It helps to fill gaps in speech, especially those high frequency words that are harder to hear. Please note it will not enable someone ot follow 100% of what is being said, even good lipreaders can only reliably  pick up 30%, but it is a useful additional clue that helps people follow conversation.

Audiology/ Hearing tests/ Hearing aids

The Freeman hospital provides the main audiology service for the following areas; Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. This is one of the many departments in the ear nose and throat (ENT) service. Initial referral to this department is through your GP

Equipment Providers

Have a hearing test first: especially if has been a while since your last one. Your hearing may have deteriorated or your hearing aid may need adjusting - ask for a repair appointment at audiology . Hearing aids available on the NHS have improved greatly and keep up with the latest tech - often being just one or two models behind.
